The Permanent Mission of Denmark to the United Nations in New York is seeking a Policy Advisor with a focus on international climate and energy policy. The ideal candidate has a strong interest in 
climate and energy issues, global affairs, the United Nations, and Danish foreign and development policy.


About the Danish UN Mission
The Danish UN Mission represents Denmark at the UN Headquarters in New York. Denmark has a strong focus on peace and security, sustainable development, humanitarian affairs and 
international humanitarian law, human rights, including the rights of Indigenous Peoples, women and girls. Denmark is elected member of the UN Security Council 2025-26.

We participate – including through the EU – in multilateral negotiations in the General Assembly and other UN fora where we work to promote Danish interests. We administer Denmark’s contributions to a number of UN Funds and Programmes and are actively engaged in the Governing Boards. 

Denmark is considered a global leader in ambitious climate action and international cooperation. As co-founder of key initiatives such as the Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance (BOGA), Group of Negative Emitters (GONE) and the Global Wind Alliance (GWA), Denmark actively promotes the transition to renewable energy and the phasing out of fossil fuels worldwide. Through its presence at the UN in New York, and especially in the 2nd Committee of the UN General Assembly, Denmark reinforces its commitment to the Paris Agreement goals, fostering partnerships that accelerate sustainable development and climate resilience on a global scale.


Who We Are

The UN Mission is an ambitious, high-paced, and dynamic workplace with approximately 55 employees, including 10 interns. As part of the Danish Foreign Service, we work closely with partners across the UN to promote Denmark’s priorities.

organize social events and team activities to strengthen cohesion.
 

Main tasks and responsibilities

As a Policy Advisor at the Danish UN Mission, your job will be to promote Danish interests, engage in multilateral diplomacy, analyse and report to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Copenhagen on 
matters of Danish priority.

Specific tasks and responsibilities will depend on the profile of the chosen candidate and may change over time. It may generally include:

  • Preparing negotiations at the UN, including coordination of positions and strategies in the EU and with other partners, and representing Denmark in these processes.
  • Engaging in information sharing, outreach and cooperation with other UN Member States.
  • Liaising with relevant parts of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Copenhagen and the Danish Government for instructions and inputs for intergovernmental processes, negotiations and events at the UN.
  • Analysing and reporting to the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on outcomes and trends in the work of the UN in New York.
  • Contributing to the preparation of high-level Danish participation in UN events, including communication and practical/logistical aspects.
  • Representing and preparing the Permanent and the Deputy Permanent Representatives’ representation of Denmark in meetings and negotiations in the General Assembly, ECOSOC and other relevant subsidiary committees.
  • Contributing to the administration and oversight of Danish grants administered by the UN mission.
  • Supervising of a Danish intern. 

 

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or equivalent.
  • Relevant knowledge of the UN, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Agenda, and possibly of international climate and sustainable energy negotiations.
  • General knowledge of EU and Danish policies and policy-making in the field.
  • Analytical skills as well as strong written and oral communication competencies.
  • Negotiation abilities as well as aptitude for collaboration, networking and fostering common solutions with colleagues and external partners.
  • Ability to work in a team as well as independently.
  • Ability to work results- and solutions-oriented and in a prioritized manner, including managing multiple tasks and working under time pressure.
  • An open-minded and flexible attitude towards handling of assignments and readiness to take on new tasks and challenges.
  • Proficiency in English both written and orally.
  • Knowledge of Danish or one of the other Scandinavian languages will be an asset.

 

Employment conditions

  • Full-time employment for 2 years with the possibility of extension on a local terms contract with the Permanent Mission of Denmark to the UN - with the possibility of extension
  • A working week of – on average – 37 hours, including a 30-minute daily lunch break, but you are employed without an upper limit on working hours. You must expect longer working hours during peak periods, while you will have some flexibility to organize your daily working hours.
  • 5 weeks (25 working days) of paid vacation days per year.
  • The basic gross yearly salary for the position – for an employee subject to US income taxation – is USD 89,500. For a tax-exempt employee the net yearly salary is USD 71,600.
  • Depending on the candidate’s experience and qualifications, an additional allowance may be added.
  • In addition, the Mission will cover the employer part of pension contribution and the employer part of medical insurance.
  • As part of your salary, you will be covered by a workplace pension scheme.
  • You will be offered reasonable coverage of sickness expenses. So will your spouse/partner/children under the age of 26, if you provide for him/her/them.
