Madam President, Madam Executive Director, Excellences,

Firstly, we would like to congratulate UN Women on the progress achieved the past year and express our sincere appreciation for the work of UN Women staff and implementing partners, who continue to deliver despite difficult circumstances.

The Annual Report of the Executive Director, including the midterm review of the Strategic Plan highlights the immense challenges to achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. This should serve to remind us of the continued importance of UN Women’s unique triple mandate.

Denmark continues to be committed to supporting UN Women through multi-year, flexible funding and as an advocate for the importance of the entity – including its centrality for the wider UN system.

VAW and normative mandate

As we witness stagnating progress on tackling biased gender norms and pervasive levels of violence against women, UN Women’s normative mandate remains essential. This work is crucial to enabling systemic change towards gender equality. We look forward to following the results of the corporate evaluation on UN Women’s social norms work to inform an intersectional, feminist approach across the entity as mentioned in the report.

Coordinating mandate, humanitarian efforts

UN Women’s strong network of women-led organisations and women’s rights organisations groups holds immense value for its own work and for the wider UN system, including in humanitarian and crisis settings.

We encourage UN Women to continue its efforts to strengthen its convening power. And to continue to leverage its membership of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee to place gender equality at the center of emergency response and preparedness planning.

Funding and partnerships

We recognize that transformative, impact level results require a long-term perspective along with predictable and flexible funding. We were encouraged by the growth in regular resources relative to other resources in 2023. We commend UN Women’s efforts to diversify its funding base, including strengthening private sector engagement, and expand its partnership base

On this note, how is UN Women working to deepen its partnerships with International Financial Institutions on the ground?

Conclusion: Summit of the Future, Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action

Madam Executive Director, as we look ahead to the Summit of the Future and next year’s 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, we look forward to continuing our strong partnership with UN Women and remain committed to supporting UN Women’s triple mandate.
