Ambassadorial-level PBC meeting on the activities of the Peacebuilding Fund

Who H.E. Erik Laursen, Deputy Permanent Representative of Denmark to the UN

Check Against Delivery

Excellencies, Chair,

I thank the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Liberia, the Permanent Representative of South Sudan, and the Assistant-Secretary-General for Peacebuilding for their briefings.

It was inspiring to hear about Liberia's progress along its transition out of conflict and since the exit of the UN peacekeeping mission in 2018. Equally, it was important to learn about the challenges and achievements in South Sudan, where the transitional government is working to deliver on the Revitalized Peace Agreement.

Denmark participated in the recent PBF partner visit to South Sudan. Thank you to PBSO for organizing and to South Sudan for hosting. It was clear from the visit that the Fund is making important contributions to peacebuilding and conflict resolution. It was also clear that national leadership for peace is important in this pivotal year for South Sudan.

The Peacebuilding Fund is an important instrument for supporting prevention and peacebuilding efforts at all levels, in operationalizing the UN resolutions on sustaining peace, and in strengthening the UN system to deliver as one.

This year, Denmark has renewed its long-term commitment to the Peacebuilding Fund with a new three-year contribution. With 200 million DKK [approximately 28,5 million USD] for the period of 2024-2026, it is an increase in our contribution. We believe multi-year commitments are important to enable flexibility and longer-term planning.

Denmark welcomes the decision to provide assessed contributions to the Peacebuilding Fund, signaling the collective recognition of the importance of peacebuilding. We note the letter by the Secretary-General and the need to ensure the continuity of voluntary contributions to PBF and urge current and potential donors to contribute.

Thank you.
