Ambassadorial-level meeting with the Advisory Group of the Secretary-General's Peacebuilding Fund
Check Against Delivery
Distinguished chairs, Excellencies,
UN peacebuilding architecture has come a long
way. Next month, we celebrate the 18-year anniversary of the Peacebuilding
Commission and the Peacebuilding Fund.
Being among the top donors to the UN
Peacebuilding Fund, Denmark commends the results achieved.
Strengthening
the relationship between the Peacebuidling Fund and the Peacebuilding
Commission is critical. First, this can be done by integrating
lessons learned from the Fund systematically in the work of the Peacebuilding
Commission, including in its advisory role to the Security Council. Second, enhancing the role of the Peacebuilding Commission as a
convener of thematic discussions could be used to bring peacebuilding actors
together to give inputs to the strategic direction of the Fund, ensuring
synergies across the peacebuilding architecture.
In terms of identifying
trends in peacebuilding, first, it is key that the Fund retains flexibility
and adaptability in order to address context specific and unpredictable needs.
This is the core of its mandate.
Second, we recommend a greater focus on cross-border
projects, climate-sensitive peacebuilding and increased financing of local
peacebuilding. Third, the PBC
must continue to strengthen the full, equal, meaningful participation of women.
Peacebuilding is only sustainable when it is inclusive. The popularity and
results of the Fund’s Gender and Youth Promotion Initiative are illustrative of
this.
Finally, it is crucial that we ensure adequate, predictable and sustained financing
for peacebuilding. First, this includes prioritising multi-annual commitments and ensuring alignment of funding streams. Second, it
entails broadening and diversifying the financing
base for peacebuilding. Third, securing assessed contributions to
the Peacebuilding Fund is critical.
Excellencies,
Strengthening the peacebuilding architecture is crucial. We welcome the recommendations in the New Agenda for Peace and look forward to continuing the conversation on synergies in the coming negotiations on a Pact for the Future.
I thank you.
