Check Against Delivery

With the Pact for the Future, we have a solid foundation on which to build a more representative and effective multilateral system. One better equipped to tackle global challenges.

When Denmark joins the UN Security Council in January, we will stand up for international law and the UN Charter as the foundation for all peace and security.

Let me highlight three key priorities for Denmark.

***

First. UN peace operations have played a vital role in conflict prevention, management and resolution across the world. But evolving global threats require us to do things differently.

Denmark strongly welcomes a review of UN peace operations – as called for in the Pact – to ensure they remain agile, adaptable, and capable of addressing emerging challenges.

Cooperation between the UN and regional organizations, particularly the African Union, must be deepened. Security Council Resolution 2719 is a positive step in this direction.

***

Second, the Peacebuilding Commission plays an important role in bringing together governments, civil society, women, youth and financial institutions around peacebuilding.

Denmark would like to see the 2025 review of the Peacebuilding Architecture further strengthen the Commission. And as a member of the Security Council, we will listen to and look for the advice of the Commission.

***

Third. Peace is undeniably more sustainable when processes are inclusive. We will continue to advocate for the full, equal and meaningful participation of women in all peace processes.

The Women Peace and Security agenda enjoys broad support, but its implementation lacks dramatically behind. We will do what we can to change this.

Finally, let me express Denmark’s deep regret with the omission of climate, peace and security language in the Pact. We will remain committed to this agenda in close cooperation with partners.

In closing - multilateralism remains our best and only path forward. Also when we do not agree on everything. The Pact for the Future has the potential to guide us towards a more peaceful and inclusive world.

The real test is ahead of us. We look forward to doing our part.
