Danish Statement for the ID with the special envoy on the situation of human rights in Myanmar
UNGA Third Committee
Interactive dialogue on the situation of Human Rights in Myanmar
Intervention by Denmark, 22 October 2021
Madame Special Envoy,
Denmark thanks the Secretary General for his timely report. Denmark is a firm supporter of the UN Special Envoy’s mandate and tireless efforts to find durable, peaceful and dialogue-driven solutions to the escalating crisis in Myanmar.
We continue to condemn the military coup in the strongest possible terms and call upon the Myanmar military leadership to without delay end the state of emergency, reinstate the democratically elected government, and immediately release all those arbitrarily detained. Denmark stands firmly on the side of the people of Myanmar and the democratic forces in their peaceful endeavours to get Myanmar back on the path towards democracy.
Denmark condemns the use of lethal force and violence against peaceful demonstrators, as well as members of civil society, women, youth, children and others. We are deeply concerned by reports of the use of sexual and gender-based violence. Denmark calls on the Myanmar military to fully respect and protect all people of Myanmar including the Rohingya Muslims and other ethnic and religious minorities.
We are alarmed by the severity of the evolving humanitarian crisis and escalating violence and call on all stakeholders in Myanmar – as well as neighboring countries – to ensure safe, full and unhindered humanitarian access. Denmark will continue to support the humanitarian response in Myanmar.
Denmark continues to support ASEAN in the efforts to find regional solutions to the crisis in Myanmar. ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus must be effectively implemented without further delay. We call on the Myanmar military leadership to allow immediately for the visit of the ASEAN Special Envoy and to provide full and unhindered access to all parties to the conflict.
We stand in solidarity with the people of Myanmar and voice their aspirations for democratic development, peace and stability.
Thank you.
