15.01.2025 Statement by Denmark at the Ambassadorial-level meeting of the UN PBC

Who Delivered by H.E. Erik Laursen, Deputy Permanent Representative of Denmark to the United Nations

Check Against Delivery

Distinguished chair, advisory group, colleagues,

The Peacebuilding Fund is an important, agile and risk tolerant mechanism of the Secretary-General that has national ownership at its center. As one of the major donor partners to the fund, Denmark commends the results achieved through PBF investments.

Today, I will raise three points.

First, synergies between the Peacebuilding Commission and the Peacebuilding Fund are important for an effective Peacebuilding Architecture. Entry points for synergies include the Commission’s engagement with countries benefitting from the Fund, and a more systematic utilization of lessons learned from PBF projects in member state deliberations such as PBC advices. It also relates to the continued need to ensure adequate, predictable and sustained financing for peacebuilding.

Second, the Peacebuilding Fund is an essential mechanism for follow up to the Pact for the Future and the Peacebuilding Architecture review. It provides important support for national peacebuilding priorities. It also provides an opportunity for integration of efforts between UN entities and with partners such as IFIs and civil society organizations.

We hope the advisory group will continue to focus on impact and innovation in their work. It is important that the fund continues to deliver in high-risk areas, transition contexts and across borders. It will be important to maintain the support for gender-responsive peacebuilding and climate-sensitive peacebuilding as well as to increase support for localization and civil society organizations.

Third, the Peacebuilding Fund and Commission are well-positioned to support national prevention strategies. They already do this and can be further leveraged.

As for national prevention strategies, it is key to consider

  • building on peace infrastructures that are already in place;
  • fostering an inclusive, participatory process for their design;
  • ensuring age-sensitive, gender-transformative and context-specific approaches; and
  • that the follow-up on such strategies should not duplicate other UN processes.

In conclusion, the PBF provides an important mechanism for investing in peace. At a time of increase in violent conflicts and increase in the demand for UN support to peacebuilding, we must continue to invest in peace.

Thank you.
