The 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly will open, Tuesday, September 13, 2016, followed by the opening of General Debate on September 20. Heads of State and Government from all over the world come to New York to participate in the opening of the General Assembly, high-level meetings and other side events during the ministerial week.
This year, the theme of the General Debate is 'The Sustainable Development Goals: a universal push to transform our world'. It marks the one-year anniversary of the historic adoption of the Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals during the General Debate last year which was presided over by Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen.
On 19 September, the General Assembly will convene a special high-level event on "addressing large movements of refugees and migrants”. On 21 September, there will also be a one-day, high-level meeting for Member States, civil society, the private sector and academic institutions to "highlight the global public health threat of Antimicrobial Resistance",
